The director of the school is Rowland Edwards, a qualified international mountain guide (U.I.A.G.M. and A.B.G.) He was also one the first climbers to qualify as a M.I A.C (Mountain Instructors Advanced Certificate) holder.

He first started climbing in the late 1950's and by 1962 had become a professional full time instructor. In 1964 he became a guide. For ten years he was a full time instructor at Plas-y Brenin where he taught rock climbing, mountaineering, ski-ing and canoeing. He also was an assessor for the MLTB's Mountaineering certificates and the ABMG courses. In 1978 he opened his own school in Sennen, Cornwall .

He has climbed and instructed in many areas of the world eg : Canada , USA, The Alps and the deserts of Jordan, were along with his son Mark he has climbed many new routes , some of which are now recognised as leading climbs of the area.

Closer to home in North Wales, where he lived between 1961 until 1976 , he climbed many hundreds of new routes and was the major pioneer in opening new routes on Great and Little Ormes . Llandudno. He also produced the first guide the Ormes.

Moving to Cornwall in 1976, where he now runs Compass West he, along with his son Mark, again climbed many hundreds of new routes. Between them they produced some of the hardest routes to have been climbed on granite sea cliffs. With the Ascent of " Question Mark" E9 on Gribber Head Mark moved Cornish climbing into the super league.

Rowland is the author of the newly published guide book "Cornish Rock" in which Mark produced all the drawings and maps.
