Rowland
has been one of the main activist in trying to generate an awareness
in climbers that we should all be taking more care of the climbing environment,
particularly the beautiful headlands and cliff tops which Cornwall is
so famous for. The trees which once covered some of our cliffs and have
now disappeared could so easily have been saved. Although thought of
as controversial, his proposals for a wider use of lower-off to protect
these areas is gradually being recognised as beneficial.
Over
the past seven years Rowland has been working towards the manufacture
of a new removable bolt called the E-Fix, which could reduce the impact
of sports climbing on the environment. It will also allow the two styles
of climbing (sports and adventure) to co-exsist.
