All courses include the following topics according to relevance/importance for each student

  • The history of the climbing rope, and its qualities
  • Knots for tying on, and their relevant advantages
  • Analysis of knots and their relevant qualities within a given situation
  • Single and multi point belays
  • Various belay methods and devices
  • Building  belay techniques, with stance analysis
  • How to improve communication techniques for multi pitches climbing.  How to abseil safely; solo and with others
  • Setting up abseils to retrieve the rope or as a fixed point
  • How to make the best of any given protection point during a climb, and on a belay stance
  • Rope management during the climb and on the belays
  • Trying out various types of modern equipment, also having a look back at some of the most historical milestones of climbing protection
  • Tried and tested racking of gear on the harness, various systems are explored
  • Escape from system, rescue practice for both the leader rescuing the second, and the second rescuing the leader, on single and multi-pitch routes ‘the first aid of rock climbing’
  • Rock climbing movement on natural rock
  • Balance and the importance of energy conservation
  • Psychology of climbing at your limit on-sight, and after practice
  • How to recover from fatigue whilst on a climb
  • We look at the environmental impact. Also what climbers can do to lessen their impact by a few simple measures
  • Understanding guide books both home and abroad
  • Wherever possible each student will have the chance to place gear as a lead climber. This is optional, and will be under close supervision.
  • Experience of single and multi pitch climbing. This takes place throughout the whole course.
  • Tides and the effect on climbs (sea cliff climbing).
  • What to carry in your rucksack
  • Many other topics will be covered and any questions a course member may have will also be answered during your course.
